Backflow Testing

Backflow Testing

What is Backflow Testing? And why you should care...

Backflow testing is the process of ensuring that an installed device is operating properly and protecting the water supply. Backflow occurs when water flows in the opposite direction to its intended direction of flow, which can lead to contamination of the potable water supply.

Backflow prevention devices are installed in plumbing systems to protect the communities and also high hazard water applications. These devices are required by law for Water Districts, City Water, Commercial, Industrial and Fire Systems and need to be tested regularly to ensure they are working correctly.

Care One Plumbing's certified testers will  test the device by simulating a failure or a "back flow condition", checking for leaks and testing its ability to prevent backflow. The tester will also ensure that the device is properly installed and functioning as intended. If any issues are found, the tester will recommend repairs or replacement of the backflow prevention device.

Backflow testing is required by Public Health entities to ensuring that the water supply remains clean and safe for consumption. It is typically required by law for commercial and industrial properties and is recommended for residential properties as well.

Care One Plumbing is Licensed & Certified for Los Angeles and San Bernardino Counties, with partner testers in Riverside, Orange counties. Care One Backflow Testers have been certified for 25+ years.

Custom Plumbing Set up

There were several aspects to the project.

1) was to install a backflow prevention device to protect the meter supply from possible contamination of the municipal water supply.

2) To install the valve and piping in preparation for a future booster pump system.

3) To determine the business's needs for water pressure and supply and then size a booster pump to meet the demand.

We performed a site survey and counted fixtures both current and future, we then selected a Grundfos Variable speed booster pump to serve the property. We had to identify the available electrical supply in order to size the pump's electrical needs, and also choose a pump that would cost effective to run day in and out. There is no sense in installing a pump that costs the customer big money to run every month, so these are all concerns that need to be address when designing a system like this.

Installing the Backflow

During the actual installation of the piping we installed the backflow and also a Wye strainer, to prevent the backflow device from being gummed up with rust, sand, silt, and anything else that comes from Pomona's water mains. Even the Pomona Water & Power guys said the piping supplying this meter was questionable??? yikes!

We also wanted to install a bypass system that would allow for the pump to be taken out of the loop for repairs or in the event of a power failure, so they would at least have the lousy City pressure still? We also installed the Uni-strut channel to support the Backflow and also have a place to mount the electrical panel, pump controls, or even a base for a cover to protect the pump system from weather, cool right? So the 2 valves to the left of the Uni-strut is where the pump will mount, when the owners are ready to take that step.

These types of systems require attention to detail, and also knowledge of plumbing systems, flow requirements, and several other important factors. We have designed and installed many systems like these with great results and happy clients, if you have need for a Custom System consider us for your design and build needs.
